1909
Different political views caused chaos and rebellions, the U.S. militarily supported the conservative rebels against their head of state at the time, president Zelaya, to protect U.S. citizens, and property.
1927
Marines fought Liberal rebels who had rejected to their offer to create peace between them and the Conservatives.
1933
The U.S. departs from Nicaragua and a National Guard Commander by the name of Anastasio Somoza Garcia, bests his rivals and even assassinates his opponent Sandino.
1936
Anastasio Somoza Garcia becomes president of Nicaragua
1979
His family reign ends after a lot of corruption from his sons to keep a good relationship with the U.S. from a rebel group that had made several small guerrilla warfare assaults on them since the 1960’s (Sandinista National Liberation Front or FSLN)
New FSLN dictator Daniel Ortega, destroys relationship with the U.S., has a very cruel rule, and does many unfair things like taking property, supporting rebel movements, and terrorists.
1981
The U.S. ceases to assist Nicaragua
Ronald Reagan starts up support Nicaraguan rebels fighting the dictator
1985
Helps to free Nicaragua of it’s cruel rule from a dictator by stopping all trade with them (embargo)
1990
Dictator Daniel Ortega responds by making peace with rebels and agreeing to hold ellections for office
Violeta Barrios de Chamarrow from the National Opposition Union whos husband, as a journalist, had been murdered
1996
Barrios has greatly imporved Nicaragua, she has; gotten it closer toward being a democratic state, improved the economy, and has made sure everyone has their rights.
New elections turn up a new president, Arnoldo Aleman, even though Violeta had a very good, and favored term.
1997
After Violeta’s good term, Aleman’s following rule devistates Nicaragua, and has it going down hill once again. Before the end of his term, he seperates his power between himself and former dictator Daniel Ortega
2001
New elections are held and the new president Enrique Bolanos of a liberal party is elected
Although he has very good intentions to help Nicaragua, political unrest stoppes him from making any progress.
2008 - 2010
elections for office that are held, are tampered with, and elections are invalid, same thing happened all three years, each time, the votes favoring the FSLN.
2009 $100 million is lost in international help from the bad elections
